Hello Tom, Thank You So Much For Taking The Time For This Interview. Your New CD "Survivors" Is Coming Out In September. As We Know, You're The Bassist For The Mannish Boys, What Inspired You To Start Recording And Releasing Solo Albums?

I had some health issues that required radiation therapy to correct. I knew music had been used throughout the centuries to help cure disease. I researched this and found that all the parts of our body vibrate at different frequencies. I found a chart that translated frequencies into musical notes. I then used these notes to assign a key to the frequency of different parts of the body. The 1st. song I composed was called "Dee Sharp" which appeared on my current solo album "Illumination". This was to help with cell rejuvenation which i used my self during treatment to help the outlying cells which were being damaged by the radiation. This was the beginning of my healing music.

How Do The Songs Come About Considering The Songwriting Process And What Inspires You?

The songs appear out of nowhere and can come at anytime. If I feel a riff coming and it stays with me I'll get setup in my home studio and do a basic track, usually on acoustic guitar. That is one way. I have also chose certain keys for friends and family that are having specific issues with different parts of their bodies. Hence J.C.B. was written for Jimmy Carl Black( Mothers of Invention) original drummer who developed lung cancer.

Any Songs You Have Written That Hold An Extra Place In Your Heart? And If So, Why?

"Angel" off the "ILLUMINATION" album. This song was written in collaboration with Jody Westover (daughter of Del Shannon,(Runaway). She was a special person and cancer took her out way before her time.We collaborated on a country music project that was never issue for release.

What Are Your Thoughts On The Recording Sessions?

Totally free to record when I wanted to and when it felt right. No production deadlines, studio time bookings etc. The music keeps coming. For that I am grateful and will keep recording solo. The Mannish Boys have reached a peak in the Blues world in the last 4 years and I'll always play the blues live. I believe this healing music can help people and that's what drives me to play, record and share it.

What About The First Show You Played, Any Memories?

A drunken high school party outside in Long Island,N.Y. There were all different factions of the school's cliques there and that's when I realized that music is a universal language and will break through all barriers. Because everybody became one and all had a good time once the music got a hold of them.

So Far, What Has Been Your Best Live Experience?

Opening for Joe Cocker in Cognac,France in 2005 with the Mannish Boys. The band had just been assembled using L.A. hotshot blues players and European gigs were set in Italy and Norway among other places. It was dusk and we opened with a blues grinder while the sun was going down. Being a new band in a foreign country the audience had no clue who or what we were. The band was on fire and we did 2 encores only to be stopped short by Cocker's managers who didn't want to make Joe look bad. Joe came on and his band kicked ass. We all had a good time and the concert was a success and the Mannish Boys were on their way to becoming one of the top blues bands in the world today.

Favourite Colours?

All shades of blue

Favourite Food?

Italian

Any Bands/Artists You Enjoy Listening To That People Might Find Surprising?

I have a very eccentric musical appetite and anything played well with feeling always satisfies me and contributes to my own creativity

Any Important Happenings That The Public May Not Be Aware Of Yet?

We'll be recording our 4th Mannish Boys album at the end of the year on splendid 2" tape

What Do You Want To Say To The Fans?

Go out and hear all the live music you can. Whether it be Blues,Rock, Classical all of it! Stay away from music not played on real instruments by feeling, compassionate, & creative Human beings. Remember a record turntable is not a musical instrument!

INTERVIEW WITH ANDREA DESMOND by Diggy-Kat

INTERVIEW WITH ANDREA DESMOND by Diggy-KatHello Andrea And Thank You So Much For This Interview. First Off, How Do The Songs Come About Considering The Songwriting Process And What Inspires You?

The songwriting process is always very unique in each circumstance. Generally, I start playing piano and then a creative surge comes over in which chords develop and I write lyrics later. And other times, I start writing down words, then form them into lyrics, create a melody, and finally write chords underneath.
I'd say what inspires me is the bigger picture of truths that I find within the universe, that get triggered by my everyday life. I never know when I'll get inspired and usually whatever I had to do that day gets put off because I get in the zone.

Any Songs You Have Written That Hold An Extra Place In Your Heart? And If So, Why?

The son "Run" holds an extra place in my heart. It recently won first place at the Eco Arts Awards songs for Freedom. I wrote it when I decided to take a courageous leap from being in a cover band in the small town I was living to launching my solo career in Seattle this past summer. As soon as I decided to fulfill being creative instead of playing music just for money, I recorded this heartfelt song called "Run". Much to my surprise (because I hadn't believe in my original music before), the song got much radio play and won awards, and then my whole music career took off from there.

What Are Your Thoughts On The Recording Sessions?

My band recently recorded at the Toybox Studio here in Seattle, and we had so much fun. Everything went smoothly. We all took off two days to hang out, drink a few beers, play some music, and record songs! Our EP is coming out really soon, and we're still in the mixing process of getting the little details fine-tuned.

What About The First Show You Played, Any Memories?

The first show we played was at Trinity Nighclub, and it was a pretty awesome first show! It was packed with over 300 people because it was with RAW Natural Born Artists. We didn't realize that our first show ever would get so much attention! The crowd was super supportive, we had a blast, and we all left with smiles on our faces, realizing that we already like the direction this band is going.

So Far, What Has Been Your Best Live Experience?

The best live show we played was at the Crocodile in Seattle. This was recently on Thursday, December 13. The sound system is one of the best in Seattle, and it just felt good to have our music represented with such a great system and sound engineer. We loved hanging out in the green room, the other bands, fans, and all the perks that come with that venue!

Favorite Colors?

Blue and Purple, which makes Indigo.

Favorite Food?

Macaroni and Cheese.

Any Memories Of The First Concert You Attended?

One memorable concert from high school was on Valentines day at the Pageant in St. Louis, where I live for four years. I was going through this rocker phase, and it was heavy metal. Definitely got pushed around the mosh pit and had the time of my life.

Any Bands/Artists You Enjoy Listening To That People Might Find Surprising?

People might find it surprising that I love Queens of the Stone Age, as my sound is more pop and delicate. I also love Deep Purple for their killer organ solos. Totally opposite of my stye. I just appreciate music from all genres/time periods. Whatever sound I've developed has been a fusion of my experiences, and since I've been in a cover band and experimented with more of a rock sound in the past, right now it just has a wide variety.

So What Do You Have Planned For Next Year?

At the rate we're going, we are thinking of applying to festivals such as Bumbershoot, as well as doing regional touring.

What Do You Want To Say To The Fans?

It truly has been a magical experience having so many wonderful opportunities happen in only six months. We are so honored to have gotten to the finals of the Seattle Jammin Challenge, winning a show at Hard Rock and music video, and we couldn't have done it without our fans' support. The bottom line is that if you're happy, we're happy. Thank you for believing in us and making our dreams come true!
